A yoga teacher recently encouraged our class to do something new. She said, â€śPay attention to your feet. You’ll learn everything you need to know about your practice and your life.”

Try it if you’re able. Bear with me, you need not be a devoted yogi.

Balance the four corners of your feet: the mound of your big toe, the mound of your little toe, your inner heel, and your outer heel. Lift all ten toes off the ground to ensure you aren’t gripping the earth. And if standing isn’t available to you, ground down in your seat, in a similar way.

Feel your feet touch solid ground. Feel yourself rooting to the earth. Play with how your weight shifts left to right, and front to back.

Breathe.

And notice where your focus lies.

It’s right here, in the moment, focused on your body and the way it is connecting with the earth beneath it.

While grounding our feet is foundational to yoga practice, it transcends the mat.

When our minds are occupied with yesterday, tomorrow, lists, worries, fears… anything that isn’t in this very moment, our minds are anywhere but in the moment.

Being where our feet are = being present.

So, here are your reminders this week to be more intentionally present:

  • All that is true and real is within you and contained in this very moment. Sink into it, acknowledge it, move through it, let it move through you.
  • Give yourself permission to focus on the moment you are in, the person you are talking with, the meeting you’re attending, the project you’re focusing on, the movement you’ve set out to complete.
  • Grounding yourself may slow you down, and that is okay. You can get back to the speed you desire later. Slow to still. Still to move again with intention.
  • Let go of anything you’re gripping and holding onto that doesn’t serve you in this moment.

 

Be where your feet are.
